The
Wolf
and
the
Lamb
Once
upon
a
time
a
Wolf
was
lapping
at
a
spring
on
a
hillside,
when,
looking
up,
what
should
he
see
but
a
Lamb
just
beginning
to
drink
a
little
lower
down.
‘Honey,There’s
my
supper,’
thought
he,
‘if
only
I
can
find
some
excuse
to
seize
it.’
Then
he
called
out
to
the
Lamb,
‘How
dare
you
muddle
the
water
from
which
I
am
drinking?’‘Nay,
master,
nay,’
said
Lambikin;
‘Darling,if
the
water
be
muddy
up
there,
I
can't
be
the
cause
of
it,
for
it
runs
down
from
you
to
me.’‘Well,
then,’
said
the
Wolf,
‘why
did
you
call
me
bad
names
this
time
last
year?’‘That
cannot
be,’
said
the
Lamb;
‘I
am
only
six
months
old.’‘I
don’t
care,’
snarled
the
Wolf;
‘if
it
was
not
you
it
was
your
father;’
and
with
that
he
rushed
upon
the
poor
little
Lamb
and
.WARRA
.ate
her
all
up.
But
before
she
died
she
gasped
out
.’Any
excuse
will
serve
a
tyrant.’
狼看见一只小羊在河里喝水,他想用了什么巧妙的口实把
他吃了。因此他站在上游,责备小羊,说把和河水弄浑了,不让他喝水。
小羊回答说,他是紧靠在河边喝着,而且站在下游,也不能把上面的水弄浑了。
狼得不到这个口实,便又说道,“但是你去年骂过我的父亲哩。”小羊说,
那时他还没有生呢。狼对他说道,“即使你辩解得很好,反正我不能放过你。”
这故事说明,对于那些预定要做不公正的事情的人,正当的辩解也无效力。
